“Hurricane,” a new music video from The MusiQ Department’s Vince Anthony, is a reflection on the simplistic beauty of songwriting, recording, and the soul-restoring power of music.
We at MusiQology Media are proud to share “Hurricane,” a music video by MusiQ Department artist Vince Anthony, released this week. Produced by Green District Media and starring Anthony himself, the music video follows the talented young songwriter through the writing and recording process.
Since joining the MusiQology team a few short years ago, Anthony has become one of Dr. Guy’s key collaborators, and his Black Child: A Song Cycle EP that released this past fall demonstrated the rich conceptual framework of this artist’s vision. “Hurricane,” a standalone single, is a layered meditation in its own right; on the release of the single, I called it a “tour-de-force of soul and sound, a spiritual meditation on peace in turbulent times. As it builds—and does it ever—Anthony’s emotional vocal grows and strengthens, with each turn through the chorus adding layers before the storm crashes against the shore.”
The video for “Hurricane”—shot at Turtle Studios, our go-to recording space in South Philly—features Anthony layering the instruments, sounds, and moods so key to the process of “Hurricane.” Starting with him alone on guitar (I can still remember the squeaks of fingers along the fretboard I heard on the song’s demo), Anthony moves from guitar to bass to microphone, fashioning himself a vessel for peace and reflection.
One of the animating themes of the larger MusiQology project over the past year has been the healing and communal power of music, something we are working to foster and support through initiatives such as our MusiQology Rx programming and partnership with other local arts nonprofits such as One Art Community Center. Those efforts, supported by Dr. Guy’s “The Music Industry Meets Activism” course this past semester as well as Penn’s Center for Experimental Ethnography, are rendered sonically here.
The video’s message is clear: The calm in the storm of contemporary life can be found in the studio or artmaking space. And Vince Anthony is as worthy and willing a guide to the eye of that storm as anyone.
