Earlier in 2018, we launched Dr. Guy’s MusiQology Podcast, a new wing of the MusiQology project of accessible scholarship and public-reaching impact from our fearless leader Dr. Guy. We hoped that the MusiQology podcast would bring our work into a new medium in a digital age, taking the often-cloistered spaces of academic conversation and, through your headphones and devices, allowing you to take part in them during your commute or in the comfort of your own home.
You all responded, downloading the episodes on their various platforms in growing numbers each week. Your response was thrilling, proof that a present desire for new modes and approaches should continue to inform the MusiQology project.
Season 2 will be launching on Monday, October 22! It focuses on the creative process with artists in different stages of their academic careers. We hope to give up-and-comers a platform to raise their profile and more established voices the space to speak freely about their career. Together, it’s a season that gives full access to the breadth of life in the creative industries. Season 2 will stream on all of our usual platforms.
The MusiQology Podcast is available on the following platforms:
iTunes Spotify Soundcloud Stitcher
Before the new episodes drop later this month, we wanted to give you a run-down on what you may have missed. Season 1 focused heavily on local creators and creative industries workers here in Philadelphia, where a thriving community of artists and producers has inspired us this year. Their stories—and contributions to the conversation—helped make the first season of the MusiQology Podcast such a success. Here’s a rundown of what you may have missed:
Our debut episode featured multitalented vocalist and local performer Laurin Talese. Laurin (who also did a Q&A about the experience for our blog) is turning heads on the local and national scenes with her soulful sound. We chatted with her about her rise and approach to the craft of music.
Episode 2 took us inside Philadelphia’s thriving jazz scene with radio institution J. Michael Harrison, who gave us an audio history lesson of his own musical history as he celebrated 20 years on the air at WRTI. He supplemented that with a Past, Present, and Future of Philly music piece here on the blog that offers new musical recommendations for any interested music fan.
For episode 3, we showed the important role the MusiQology Podcast can play—capturing a recent talk between Dr. Guy and legendary critic Greg Tate at the Institute of Contemporary Art on our home campus at the University of Pennsylvania. Celebrating the release of Flyboy 2, a new book of essays, Guy and Greg discussed how journalistic practices from interviewing to listening are important.
Episode 4 featured one of our favorite local collaborators, V. Shayne Frederick, a performer whose vocal range and talents make him an essential part of the city’s new cultural musical fabric. He and Guy discuss finding, nurturing, and sustaining the perfect musical moment. Look for more V. Shayne content soon.
Episode 5’s guest, Lee Mo, is another artist at the center of Philly’s jazz revival. Lee Mo offered the pod perspective on coming up here and building social relationships with other city musicians.
The guest for Episode 6 almost needs no introduction: poet, muse, and frequent blog subject Ursula Rucker, who breaks down the moment for creatives when they realize, “I am an artist.” This conversation, which also touches on community activism, is a can’t-miss look at Rucker’s career and values from an artist who inspires us constantly.
Season One wrapped up with Episode 7, a conversation with musical multi-media polymath William Wolf. Wolf, a trained musician, is also a visual arts creative worker whose talents helped MusiQology realize vision for a new music video coming soon featuring MusiQology artist Bridget Ramsey.
