Dr. Guthrie Ramsey and Dr. Guy’s MusiQology are very proud to announce the launch of a new podcast series on music, race, and the creative arts, set to debut with its first episode on Monday, April 2. The podcast, hosted by Dr. Ramsey and featuring a wide array of musicians, artists, and scholars, will present thoughtful conversations in a readily accessible format.
“The mission of Dr. Guy’s MusiQology is to make musicology accessible to the greater public through combining performance, composition, writings and collaborative projects with the teaching of American musical history and culture of the past and present day,” Dr. Ramsey wrote nearly nine years ago as he launched MusiQology, the blog that would become the space for his public-facing scholarship and experimentations for years to come. The MusiQology podcast is Dr. Ramsey’s logical next step, an extension of his longstanding passion for multimodal scholarship that speaks to diverse audiences inside the academy and out.
The first season—which features six episodes releasing Bi weekly each Monday and set to run through May emphasizes the wealth of local talent and thinkers working and performing in Philadelphia, home to MusiQology and a vibrant community of creative artists and intellectuals. Each week, Dr. Ramsey interviews a different collaborator, artist, or thinker on the creative process, their endeavors, and more. Episodes will be available via iTunes, Stitcher, Spotify, and other podcast distribution services.
“I see a big part of my work as trying to understand how music achieves powerful effects and sharing what I’ve learned with others, both inside and outside of the academy,” Dr. Ramsey wrote nine years ago. “Audiences decide what music means, and I enjoy teaching and writing about this process as well as participating a performer.” With the launch of Dr. Guy’s MusiQology Podcast, Dr. Ramsey continues to find new, innovative and creative ways to connect with the public by bringing together diverse perspectives on current issues regarding music and the music industry and its roots in musical history and culture. By bringing musicology to the people in an engaging and approachable way, Dr. Ramsey hopes to change the way people think about, embrace and appreciate music’s power one podcast at a time.
