Yesterday we learned that the police officers who shot and killed 12 year old Tamir Rice will not be indicted for criminal charges.
Our hearts ache for all those who are snatched from us through state-sanctioned violence. It makes us echo the voice of the ancestors who asked this poignant question through their Spiritual songs, “Lord, How Come Me Here?”
Listen as Kathleen Battle is the voice of the ancestors and asks this painful question that seemingly has no answer.
Many thanks to Musiqology Contributor, Alisha Lola Jones, Ph.D. (@move_and_shake), for reminding us of this chilling performance.
Lord, how come me here?
Lord, how come me here?
Lord, how come me here?
I wish I never was born
There ain’t no freedom here, Lord
There ain’t no freedom here, Lord
There ain’t no freedom here, Lord
I wish I never was born
They treat me so mean here, Lord
They treat me so mean here, Lord
They treat me so mean here, Lord
I wish I never was born
They sold my chillen away, Lord
They sold my chillen away, Lord
They sold my chillen away, Lord
I wish I never was born
Lord, how come me here?
Lord, how come me here?
Lord, how come me here?
I wish I never was born
I wish I never was born
I wish I never was born
