We are excited to announce that Musiqology editor in chief will be hosting a special night of protest music at the Annenberg Center in Philadelphia on October 16th. Fortunately, tickets are still available.
The tense times in which we live demand a musical response, read more from the Philadelphia Inquirer about this special night below.
Pianist Guthrie Ramsey of Dr. Guy’s Musiqology is also a music-history professor at the University of Pennsylvania. With his ensemble, he will present “Everybody’s Protest Music,” a riff on James Baldwin’s essay “Everybody’s Protest Novel.”
“We’re really in a moment of protest here and around the world,” said Ramsey. “As a historian, I know these cycles come up throughout American history.”
His performance will be packed with protest songs, some original and some covers; spoken-word poetry; and love songs. At times, he says, love is protest.
“Happiness can be protest when there’s no rational reason to be,” he said. “Joyful people somehow dig deep into themselves.”
