The talk of this past Summer was Kara Walker’s provocative art installation in Brooklyn entitled, “A Subtley: or the Marvelous Sugar Baby an Homage to the unpaid and overworked Artisans who have refined our Sweet tastes from the cane fields to the Kitchens of the New World on the Occasion of the demolition of the Domino Sugar Refining Plant.”
When I saw it, I remarked that the joke was on us, because the people who came to see the Sphinx and our diverse reactions were the real exhibition. Seems like this was a part of Walker’s intent and there is a forthcoming documentary entitled, The Audience, that chronicles how visitors reacted to her work.
