The Musiqology team congratulates Mark Anthony Neal for being named the James B. Duke Distinguished Professor of African American Studies at Duke University.
A friend and supporter of our work here, Mark is the preeminent scholar of black popular music working today. His work is unsurpassed in its breadth, insight, impact, variety and visibility both inside and outside of the academy. He is a remarkable and prolific researcher, writer, and a pioneer who has made an indelible mark on the field of African American cultural studies by linking the concerns of the academy with the new dissemination methods of social media. Neal has, without doubt, been instrumental in the creation of not only a new mode of dissemination for serious ideas about black popular culture, his work has become the paradigm for how that work is conducted.
