Last night Aretha Franklin closed out another stellar presentation of the annual Kennedy Center Honors Awards Ceremony. This year’s honorees included: actress/singer Rita Moreno, filmmaker George Lucas, actress Cicely Tyson, orchestra conductor Seiji Ozawa, and singer/songwriter Carole King.
Well, one of Aretha Franklin’s biggest hits was a song penned by Carole King “(You Make Me Feel) Like a Natural Woman. And last night’s performance of it proved while Aretha Franklin is still the living and breathing QUEEN of SOUL.
Here are some highlights:
1. She saunters out onstage and lays her gold clutch on the piano (cuz she don’t trust y’all to watch her purse).
2. She saunters out onstage in a full length fur coat (cuz she’s from detroit and she don’t trust your coat check).
3. she gets up from the piano to really tear the house down and shakes of said fur coat and just drops it on the stage like it’s a drug store poncho (because for her, furs are probably just as easy to come by).
4. even though she’s 73, she still took “(you make me feel) like a natural woman” and gathered your entire life because she’s STILL the Queen of Soul.
Carole King could hardly contain herself and why should she.
Bonus: Aretha probably didn’t wear her own Kennedy Center pendant because it didn’t go with her fur. #notmad
