Last night BET/Centric aired the annual Soul Train Awards.
And they nailed it 92.645% of the time.
There are five major things that The Soul Train Awards got right (and one unmentionable performer that they got horribly wrong).
1. Erykah Badu was the perfect host. She was funny, shady, and in all her glory and splendor all night.
2. The Jazmine Sullivan/After 7 performance is what I’d been waiting for. Jazmine took to the stage and sang, “Let it Burn,” which samples the 90s R&B group After 7’s song, “Ready or Not.” So of course the Soul Train Awards brought them together to share the groove.
3. That Soul Cypher situation. Where else but a black music awards show would we see Chrisette Michelle, K-Ci (from Jodeci), Lalah Hathaway, and Eddie LeVert mic toss while Erykah Badu deejays.
4. Giving Jill Scott a major achievement award. Because she’s awesome and she deserves it.
5. This Babyface tribute. No more words are needed, but in case you forgot that Babyface wrote most of what was great about 80s/90s R&B, this awesome tribute performance is here to remind you.
Enjoy!
